The Shepherd's Center of Richmond Open University
he
Open University provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation and
socialization. Classes are held at churches in three areas of the city.
Eight-week sessions are held in the fall, winter and spring with well-qualified
lecturers or instructors, many of whom are faculty or retired faculty members of
area colleges and universities. Programs at the three sites, the only such
set-up in Shepherd's Centers across the country, are different from one another.
Members may attend classes as any location at any time. (See schedule below.)
Courses may include languages (French, Spanish, German), literature, history,
art, music, religious studies, philosophy, writing, estate planning, bridge,
antiques, wood carving, Yoga, Feldenkrais
Method® (link to more information), travel (a weekly illustrated
travelogue at each site), and health subjects (often in a series). Selected
programs are videotaped and available through the Center's audio and video
lending library.
A bring-your-own-lunch (with coffee and dessert available for a small fee) is
followed by a speaker each noon. Recent topics have included Understanding
Islam, current world situations, and art appreciation as well as musical
performances.
